Removable wall decals

Tired of the old decal on your wall and want to remove it? Here’s how to do it easily.

The old trend of bare walls for a plain, minimal look just doesn’t cut it anymore. Today there are other design options and styles for creating a fashionable, attractive look in every room. One of the more advanced ways is using wall decals. They’re a DIY project, with no need for a professional, at low prices and without tools. Wall decals come in a range of styles and beautiful designs.

Wall decals – not what you think

When we say “decal,” we don’t mean just any sticker. You don’t simply walk into a store, buy a sticker and stick it on the wall of a room. The stickers we all know are much thinner, and their quality doesn’t let them stay on a surface for long. Wall decals are made specifically for one purpose: to be applied to a wall or any other smooth surface, such as windows or furniture, and there are even decals made for floors.

Wall decals for home decor

Decals made for home decor are produced from  a material called “vinyl” – a synthetic material that looks like thin plastic but isn’t plastic. A “regular” sticker has paper on the back and a kind of clear paper on the front, while vinyl wall decals are much thinner because they’re coated with adhesive themselves and are heat-resistant, so the adhesive holds even in humid and damp conditions.

High-quality wall decals can also be removed and reapplied. The quality of the material ensures they stick right to the edges, so they don’t curl or lose their original shape. When buying, make sure the product you’ve chosen is a quality decal that is clearly removable and reapplicable.

The quality of the decal determines how long it lasts and how well it stays stuck without losing its shape; it has nothing to do with the type of adhesive applied to it.

How to remove wall decals

If you’ve had wall decals up for a while and want to replace them with a different style or another decal, you can use scissors to help lift the decal. If the decals have been on the wall for months or years, they may be stuck very firmly and be hard to remove. In that case, simply take a hair dryer and warm them carefully – they’ll be ready to peel off easily. When you remove a decal that’s been up for years, a slightly sticky layer may remain. That has an easy fix too – use rubbing alcohol or any other adhesive remover and the sticky layer will disappear easily.
